                 Q & A TIME!
Q1. What inspired your latest piece?
A.
It’s actually a really big part of my story, where I got my inspiration. The fact is it was written for my wife, and slightly about her. It was a Christmas Gift to her, in which I thought about how fun it would be to put her into a fantasy book. She’s such a huge nerd (one of the many reasons why I married her) and her character was so much fun to throw curve balls at.

Q2. Apart from writing, what other hobbies, skills, interest or experience do you have?
A. Outside of writing? I do a lot, I think. I’m a graphic designer, printing t-shirts online. I started a while ago with that and I love creating Nerdy Shirts that people freak out about. I have tried my hand just a little, at Stand-up Comedy.  But I didn’t pursue it too much, because I didn’t want to sully the talent that it takes to be a Comedian.  I also like to work with bands. I played bass for a band a while ago, which was a blast. And I did some lyrics for another, and when one of my favorite artists sang them, I felt as though I could die and go to heaven.

Q3.
How did you start writing?

A.
I started writing coming out of Film School. I wanted to write scripts and make movies and shows (and I still do) but I realized that it it’s too expensive to make movies. Then I tried to write Comic Books (and I still want to) but It would be a commitment that I didn’t feel I was being lead to do. I was afraid of writing Novels, cause their so big and scary. As well, I’m a terrible writer. Then one day I just sat down and wrote a page or two, and then next thing I know I had the first draft of my book finished.  Then a second book, and now I’m using the second book as a way to get attention for the first.

Q4. Favourite Word
A.
Vindictive.
The second you throw that into an argument, or describe someone with it, you become validated beyond reproach.  It’s like the bazooka of verbal warfare, and I’m always looking for a new battle.

Q & A TIME!
Q1.
What comes to mind when you hear ‘first draft’?
A.
When I hear first draft, two things come to mind. The first thing is the writing of the first draft. This is the part of writing I love most—staring at a spiral notebook with blank pages while I hold a mechanical pencil in my right hand. That’s creativity unbound, the only limitation … imagination. The second thing I think of is a completed first draft. This is the part I used to dread but have learned to love. At this point, great ideas surface for heightening conflict and tension, for upping the stakes. Editing and polishing the first draft is my chance to make this story one that the readers can’t put down. It’s the opportunity to flesh out the main characters, adding some backstory, so that the readers will love them, root for them, and boo the villain.

Q2.
What inspired your latest piece?
A. This is sad to say, but my current release began with intense anger.  When I looked around me in America, I didn’t see the nation I grew up in, the nation I loved so dearly. The qualities of our national character that made America good and great were being stripped away at an incredible rate. I wanted to expose this downward spiral out of anger, but soon realized that would not make an enjoyable, uplifting story. Instead, I focused on what it would take to return our nation to its roots—one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
There are many pessimists who have written off the younger generation, but I have hope for the Millennials. From them will come our future leaders. So I crafted a story where an early-twenties man and woman together held the keys to stopping a would-be tyrant as America sat on the brink of tyranny. My hero and heroine also had a deep childhood relationship that had been brutally destroyed. After extrapolating the bad things I saw happening to America into the near future, and exaggerating them a bit, I introduced my hero and heroine. They had to resolve their relationship, work together to start a grassroots resistance movement, and stay alive when the overreaching executive wanted them silenced, permanently. I was blessed to have Susan May Warren help me splice the romantic thread into the thriller plot.
The end result was much better than an angry rant and the early book reviews confirm this conclusion.

Q3.
Self publishing vs. Traditional publishing? Which is better?
A.
The answer really depends on your purposes in writing your book. If your book is written primarily to minister to people, then you make the choice based upon the publishing option you believe will reach the people who most need to read the book.
If your writing needs to supplement your income, you have a financial decision to make. The royalties paid by traditional publishing companies won’t help much, financially, unless your book sells 20,000 full-price copies or more. If you self-publish,
you will have to do a lot of promotional work, but you can generate the same income with far fewer sales, e.g. 4-5 thousand copies.
If the message of your book is time-sensitive, as is my political thriller series, Against All Enemies, you may have to self-publish to control the schedule. My three-book, political thriller series needed to be released across the election year, 2016. Book 1, Voice in the Wilderness, is ready for release. I’m still writing the first draft of Book 2, Voice of Freedom, releasing in May. The first draft of book 3, Chasing Freedom, releasing in August, is done but needs major revision. It would be impossible to go with a traditional publisher and meet my schedule, so I elected to self-publish this series.

Q4. Favourite Word?
A.
Home – whether we’re talking about our country, our residence, where our spouse/family is, or being home with our Lord, we always know when we’re home.

Meet Katherine Hayton - Author of Breathe and Release

Name: Katherine Hayton
Country: New Zealand

            Q & A TIME!
Q1. What comes to mind when you hear ‘first draft’?
A. Complete and utter freedom. I love writing the first draft because I don’t have to worry about my sentence structures or where the plot is going. I usually start with a beginning and an ending and the bit in between is entirely open until I get there. It’s a treat to write without having to worry about how many adverbs and pronouns and split infinitives are going on.

Q2. How often do you write?

A. If Twitter posts count, then every day. If I’m writing a first draft, then I write something every day and once I get onto rewriting and editing I do that every day. Even when I’m finishing up a book and thinking more about marketing and formatting and all those fun things I have my weekly newsletter and weekly blog to write. So, lots of days, but not always every day.

Q3. How do you juggle writing with your daily life?
A.
It really eats into my TV watching time. I try to write before I start work for the day when my brain still has some measure of alertness and on the weekends when I have nothing better to do. I write about 1,200 words an hour so as long as I have a stretch that long in the morning I’ll be done for the day. If I’m stuck and don’t know what comes next, then often I’ll have to sit down at night and hammer out a few words to make up the difference and get back on track. Luckily (or unluckily if you like them) I don’t have children or pets so my time doesn’t need to be as closely managed as some writers I know.

Q4. Favourite Word?

A. Lollipop. It sounds like such a happy word and it contains a whole lot of joyful memories of my youth where a 5c sweet was the best treat in the world ever. I’d use it more often except for the sexual innuendo which has been attached through no fault of its own. The poor words that we malign for no reason other than they’re associated with sucking.

                  Q & A TIME!
Q1. What inspired your latest piece?
A.
Black 21 was inspired by so many things. When I first started this story, it was a college-town romance about a homecoming dance. I wasn’t excited writing it, so I stopped. I actually dreamed of my second scene in the first chapter of two men arguing in a kitchen over the girl sitting there, like it was a bet. This is a huge part of my story. I’ve already read Stephen King, so I have to credit his writing for inspiring my work. Years later, I went back to this story and was determined to finish it, but a different title and theme came to mind, a darker theme. I love romance so wanted to keep that part of it, showing love will save you in the end. I kept the dance as the focal point of the story, but it turned into a dark twenty-first birthday where the man would become immortal. It’s about good versus evil, light versus dark with some religious components. My MC, Daisy, wears a cross and believes strongly in God (which in the story also means herself/good/higher self), and Jack Red represents the devil/man-made thoughts/lower self. It’s a love story of two people, Daisy and Christian (a name that explains itself in the story), and a contract made a century ago. Of course, good wins in the end, but I do go into another book of Lana’s Calling, their daughter, who fights Jack Red. Readers seem to love Jack because he’s so sinister and evil, but he’s also funny with a dark sense of humor. I’d say my underlying message is love/good always wins if you trust. I didn’t set out to make it about that; it just happened. It’s what’s in my subconscious mind. All writers write what’s hidden in them, whether they want to or not.

Q2. What advice would you give to inspiring writers?
A.
Write what’s in your heart. Don’t try to please everyone, because it won’t happen. Honor your story and yourself; the readers will sense that and get what you’re saying. Be authentic. Don’t listen to that negative voice in your head; ignore it at all costs. Surround yourself with positive writers and do what’s best for you/for your writing, story, promoting. It’s different for all of us. As long as you have the passion and drive to see your work out there, you’ll go far. Also, get a second eye, beta, for your final draft because you will miss things, I promise. Most of all, have fun!

Q3. What is your secret ingredient/s for writing a great book?
A.
First, have a basic plot in mind to get you going. I’m a panster (one who wings it) and don’t outline in detail, but I will write out a short summary of plot/characters/motivation/goals so I know what background to give each scene. I love keeping readers in suspense and turning those pages to find out what will happen next, as stated in many reviews. I trust in this information coming from a higher place. Just when I think I know something, it changes and I’m even surprised. I listen to my characters and let them tell the story. Don’t add too much detail, either, just enough to let the reader fill the rest in, use their imagination. I usually skim those long passages in books because, frankly, they’re boring. Today’s audience wants fast-paced writing, nothing to bog it down and derail from the action/story. Always keep the story going. Make sure characters are well-developed, even the minor ones. Give even the villains something to care about.

Q4. Favourite Word?
A.
Love

                 Q & A TIME!
Q1.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
A.
Within you there are stories you always wanted to read and/or have told, but you never found them. They may be about anything, the past, the future, adventures, tragedies, love, space, faith, creation, whatever caught your interest and passion. Look within yourself, find them, and write those stories.

Q2.
How did you start writing?
A.
One day I was shopping for a book to read and found a paperback in a grocery store that looked interesting. It cost $5.95. The cover was artistically great. The back description and book premise was incredibly intriguing. The first few pages read well. When I got home and got about ten pages further into it, I threw it against the opposite wall in disgust. The leading characters and their actions were just too unbelievable and rising story action way too artificially generated. I had wasted my money. That’s when my wife told me to write my own stories and make them go the way I thought they needed to go. I got hooked on the idea and an author was born, but it took me sixteen years to publish my first book.

Q3.
How difficult/ easy is it to write books that fall under the same series?
A.
I actually find writing a series a little easier.  Although locations, troubles, and actions can vary, your main characters and their personalities, troubles, etc. are already set. That familiarity then lends itself to finding the infinite number of ways I can bedevil them in different plot lines. It also helps ease and quicken the outlining of individual stories in a series because you are building on story foundations already laid and don’t need re-invented. The difficulties come in trying not to be formulaic in each story and presenting fresh material within those preset foundations.

Q4. Favourite Word?

Title: The Chinese Fire Drill
Genre: Police Procedural, Romance Mystery, Crime Fiction
Summary:
A Chinese Fire Drill is a slang term for any chaotic situation that defies a logical resolution.
To generate campaign funds to control the upcoming elections in a major U.S. city, mafia arsonists set high value commercial fires to defraud millions from insurance companies. However, they accidentally murder a policeman’s illegal immigrant aunt who was working as a hotel maid in one of the torched buildings. Those connected arson fires then become a felony federal case labeled The Chinese Fire Drill, one that generates bribery, murder, theft, media lies, and gang wars to cover up the mafia crimes and corrupt officials involved.
Unwillingly caught up in the purposely bungled mess, a jaded and haunted veteran street cop nicknamed Mister Hobo tries to steer clear of it all, but fails. Somehow, somewhere he has unwittingly seen or found something that has marked him for assassination in the cover up, but he has no clues as to what. To stay alive he has to begin digging into who and what caused the lethal chaos coming at him.
To complicate matters a beautiful, high strung ballet diva named Anna Li Zurko has just returned from Paris. She has long cherished dreams for a dancing career as well as a determination to find and marry an old high school crush named Holland O. Beau. She is also the long alienated daughter of a scheming con artist Gypsy father and Tong connected Chinese mother, but Anna doesn’t know how deeply involved her family has been in the city’s criminal underworld. She just wants to find her man.
Officer H.O. Beau, aka Hobo, then becomes a mob and matrimonial target amidst murder, mayhem, and madness while just trying to stay alive, sane, and ... single.
It’s an old story of boy vs. girl told with dark humor and street action suspense. It’s also a Chinese Fire Drill.

                                             Q & A TIME!
Q1.
How did you start writing?
A. Following my long directing, producing and writing career in film and television which ranged from pop videos, commercials and corporate promotions to TV broadcast. I made the award-winning documentary 'The Colours of Infinity', which I followed with 'Is God a Number?' then with 'Clouds are not Spheres'. 'Colours' has already been transmitted in over 50 territories and is currently available in four languages.  I have published two popular science books: 'Introducing Fractals' in 2009 and 'The Colours of Infinity' in 2010. This book was published by Springer and is based on the film. After publishing these two factual books I decided to return to my first love, which was writing fiction. I wanted to entertain, inform and inspire my readers. I wrote the comic thriller 'Nothing and Everywhere.' This book is also a story about the hero and the heroine finding love. It explores some important ideas in mathematics. Having made three films about Fractal Geometry and written two books on the subject I wanted to weave my knowledge of the subject into the novel. The beautiful heroine of 'Nothing and Everywhere' is a mathematical genius. It is her knowledge that solves the mystery of the hero John Smith's stolen computer.

Q2.
What advice would you give to inspiring writers?
A. Conceive a good story and create strong characters that will hold a reader's attention and work hard.

Q3.
What inspired your latest piece?
A. Recalling my life in Cambridge in the 1960s. The novel is semi-autobiographical. I was living in Cambridge where the novel is set and I was 19 in 1962. The twin sons in the Wheatcroft family represent the two sides of my character. Mark is the pragmatic scientist, whose life is not happy. Dominic, the hero of the story, is the mystic poet, who travels to India and finds what he is looking for and thus fulfillment.

                        Q & A TIME!
Q1.
What inspired your latest piece?
 A. My latest book, Behind The Mask, was inspired by stories told to me by my parents, friends and aunt who lived in France during WWII. In fact, at the end of the book I let my readers know which scenes were based on real-life incidents. My Dad was with the Free French and the French Navy, my Mom and Grandfather worked for the American Consulate in France.

Q2.
What advice would you give to inspiring writers?
 A. Don’t feel like the each chapter has to be perfect before you move on to the next one, or you will never finish your story, just go with the flow. There will be plenty of time to go back and edit. Think of a story like a painting, sketch your picture,(write the story) start the colors (fill in more details about your characters, as you get to know them better. Make sure you have used your sense of smell or sound in the scene) than go back and fill in with more layers of color. (Check you grammar, you sentence structure.. short and quick for tense moments, etc. Make sure everything has come together and you have tied up all loose ends) And…. Write , write write!  Don’t give up, even when you feel like no one will ever publish your book.

Q3.
What does your family and friends think of your writing? Are they supportive?
A.Gosh yes, my husband is my biggest supporter. He is constantly talking about my work to others and thinking of ways I can promote my books.

Late in the 21st century, the United Continental States of America (or UCSA), comprising the former USA, Canada and Mexico, is running smoothly: unemployment has been all but eradicated, terrorism is quashed in the country, and internal dissent diminishes by the day. Most people thank President Meyers for this. Many can no longer remember when there was last an election, but as long as he keeps the country safe from the terrorist group Hariq Jihad (‘Fire War’), this seems a small price to pay.
Gunnery Sergeant Anthony Jackson is the model Marine: highly trained, absolutely efficient, and unquestioningly dedicated to his country. The only thing he can conceive of putting before his nation is his family, his wife Courtney and two daughters Maya and MacKenzie. Conscripted into the personal security detail of President Meyers, he begins to get glimpses that not everyone is as content with the current situation as he is, but attributes this to terrorist agitation and fringe lunacy. When his older daughter Maya begins to question the creeping erosion of personal liberties and the revoking of democratic rights, however, he begins to fear for her safety, as well as his own and that of his family. In a climate in which entire families disappear due to minor offenses, one can’t be too careful.
The tensions between liberty and safety, between family and country, will force Jackson to rethink all his beliefs, and lead to a collision with the system he has dedicated his life to serving.
Fire War is a suspenseful, gripping and unnerving examination of the paradoxes of power, the price of liberty, and the dictates of conscience. The world you live in will never look the same again.

                      Q & A TIME!
Q1.
What inspired your latest piece?
A. A few years ago I sponsored an after school club called Literary Lions. We would write short stories and poems to share, and at the end of the year we published an anthology for each student to take home. One day we were writing and an idea came to me through a writing prompt. I looked at the prompts my students were choosing from and one fit perfectly with a dream I’d had. I wrote what became the first chapter of my novel and it blew my students away. I put my writing aside and worked on it little by little until last year when I finally sat down and decided to pump out the story. Within three months Something Within – Reveal was born. The upcoming books in the series are already floating around in my head like little clouds filled with drops of inspiration. I’m just waiting for the storm.

Q2.
Of all the things you could have done, why write?
A. I’ve always loved to write. When I was a child I was focused more on poetry, but a few short stories sprouted from my wild imagination. I remember coming home from the movies (as a child) and wondering what happened next. After the movie was over I knew the story wasn’t over. I wanted to know what happened to the characters. I didn’t necessarily believe in all of the happily ever afters, and I would sit and imagine all of the tragic things that would happen to the characters next and how they would overcome those problems. I would rewrite my own happy ending…after the tempest. Writing (and my crazy imagination) has always been my passion. I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Q3.
How difficult/ easy is it to write books that fall under the same series?
A. Writing books under the same series isn’t too difficult. When I was a child and I imagined all of the things that could happen to characters after the ending, I was already creating a series. Each problem could be a new book. I don’t think any story is ever REALLY over. I mean, until the characters grow old and die, you can always create another antagonist. That being said, some stories are overwritten. I think most series should have a limit. I read one a while back and once I got to book twelve I thought it was over. I just found out there are two more books out and I felt my eyes rolling before they actually did. I thought book twelve (or was it thirteen) ended well. I don’t want to be one of those writers. I think three or four in a series is fine. Then you can move on to other stories. I have too many different stories in my arsenal, and I’d like to shoot them out someday.

Q4. Favourite Word?
A.
Though there are many words I love, my favorite is accomplished, because once I’m done writing and my story is out for my readers to enjoy, that’s exactly how I feel.

                    Q & A TIME!
Q1.
What advice would you give to inspiring writers?
A.Write for fun, not for money, because usually there is no money from writing. Better start writing when you are rich, then you don't have to worry about sales -:). For many fellow - authors that I'm in contact with books are more associated with spending rather than earning.

Q2.
Apart from writing, what other hobbies, skills, interest or experience do you have?
A. I'm a big Dynamo Kyiv fan. I also watch boxing. Used to indulge into night life and traveling this planet. In the past, when my health allowed - adrenaline inducing activities like sky diving, bungee, dancing on the scene in Chao Phraya brothel in Bangkok and stuff like that-:)

Q3.
How do you deal with negative feedbacks/ ratings/criticism?
A. I respect them as legit opinions. I thought the reaction would be worse -:), so I'm pleasantly surprised with lots of positive feedback and I respect negative attitude as well.

Q4. Favourite Word?
A.
Blyad
